For the first time in 18 years, I don’t have a dog to walk.

The sudden death of our precious Kamilla has left a huge void in our lives. When my dog Bubba died more than two years ago, Millie helped lessen the blow. Bubba and I had been together for 15 years and went through a lot of changes, including moving from Thibodaux to Baton Rouge, then to Nashville and finally Murfreesboro. From single life to married life. From newspaperman to  corporate communicator. He was my familiar. But Kamilla, my sweet little Millie, helped me through the days after his death from intestinal cancer, with our daily walks and her unconditional love.

Kamilla died on Christmas morning while being boarded during our trip to Louisiana for the holidays. She was only 7. Unknown to us, she developed Cushing’s disease — a tumor on her adrenal gland. Her vet thought it was another urinary infection, which she’d had frequently in her life. Kamilla died in her sleep. That’s the only consolation. She didn’t suffer in death like Bubba and Krista, her predecessor and great-aunt,  did.

So here we are, dogless for the first time in our marriage. We’ll get another dog in a few months, but for now we’re numb and occupying our time with our hobbies, genealogy research for me and crafting for my wife. Life goes on.
